SB756 passes at the last minute
Date : May 16, 2006

At 5:58, the last bill pased was SB756, that contains
language to allow APRN's to write prescriptions for
psuedoephedrine products. It was Rowena's swan song!
Thanks for all your help!
We'll be back next year stronger than ever.

Susan McCann at BNDD and Wendy Carlson at ANA both informed
me that the language in SB756 will allow APRN's to write a
prescription for any product containing pseudoephedrine.
Apparently, Florida has made a similar move and allows
their APRN's to even write for several drugs listed on the
Schedule II list.

Session ended on Friday at 6pm. Although we will not be
able to begin work on new legislation until next January
when legislators reconvene, NOW is the time to get active
on campaigns in your District.
Every State Representative is up for re-election (except
for those term limited or not running again). For example,
Representative Munzlinger was a staunch supporter of trying
to help us get HB1102 and SB566/576 passed. He needs your
support - either through a monetary contribution to his
campaign, or by hosting an event/fundraiser/meet & greet at
your clinic, distributing flyers or anything that promotes
him to your patients as pro-nursing.
As for the Senate, only the Senators from the even numbered
districts are up for re-election. For example, Senator
John Cauthorn from the 18th District is term-limited and
cannot run again. Therefore, two House incumbants, Bob
Behnen and Wes Shoemyer, are both running for that Senate
seat. I would greatly encourage you to get involved in
that race to secure a pro-nursing candidate for MONA.
MONA's Political Action Committee will be meeting to select
the candidates to endorse. If you have been following the
action in the House and Senate this year, I think you know
who has been helpful and who has not. But I encourage all
of you to meet with your legislators asap and discuss
MONA's priorities for next session - get their commitment -
and then get to work to get them elected. (Of course, only
if they agree with our agenda!)
Feel free to contact me at any time at 314-651-1185, or by
e-mail. Thank you again so much for all of your help this
session. We came so close, but now know our hurdles we
have to get over before next session begins.
