APNO member is stepping up to the plate
Date : May 2, 2006

Paula,

I was notified Thursday that I was (by acclaimation) voted
the state Rep for AANP this next year and I think I am
going to end up if no one else runs the regional director
for the Region F (districts 4, 5 & 19) for MONA unless
someone else puts their name in the hat over the summer. My
main goal is getting ALL Missouri NPs coordinated and
informed of what is going on both nationally and in
Missouri. We have just got to get coordinated so that a
Massive show of NP interest and support is coordinated on
Jefferson City instead of 20 different small groups heading
up there at a time. I am going to try and do some traveling
around the State to talk with NP organizations and/or get
them to organize in area groups so that they all get the
same information at the same time. I hope we can get a
“Legislation Liaison” in each small group and then we would
be able to disseminate information in kind of a tier
system. Another thing is getting the apathy and complacency
out of our systems. We had better stand up and stand tall
or we are going to lose out and all the privileges we have
had, we may lose. Florida and Missouri have been set out by
the AMA as example states to challenge our Scope of
Practice. It is happening in Jefferson City right now and
they are doing it in Florida (straight from the NP’s I
visited with in Washington DC last month at the
conference). I would be interested in getting APNO to join
AANP as a group member also. It would mean a reduction in
individual membership of $10. They are great at keeping us
informed of legislation on the national front that mean
more privileges for NPs and watch our backs while we are
working taking care of our patients. Please pass this along
to the membership and particularly Dan Johnson (I think he
is our legislative coordinator for APNO). I would be most
eager to talk with our APNO group and share what I can
about state, MONA, AANP and some of the federal legislation
with the membership. We have to do something now and for
the future or we may no have one as advance practice in
Missouri. I’m trying not to sound like chicken little, but
if the AMA and the Osteopathic State and National
Organizations have their way, we would be back to snatching
them coffee and carrying a lantern.
